Protecting Yourself in the Event of an Earthquake

Earthquakes are unpredictable natural events that can cause significant disruption, often with little to no warning. However, by taking preventive measures, you can reduce potential harm and minimize disruption.

Before an Earthquake

Prepare for an earthquake by securing heavy furniture, appliances, and items that could fall or shatter. Anchor bookshelves to walls, install latches on cabinets and store heavier objects on lower shelves to reduce the risk of injury or damage. Build an emergency kit with essentials such as non-perishable food, water, a flashlight, batteries, and a first-aid kit.

Reviewing your home insurance policy to determine whether it includes earthquake coverage is also essential. Standard homeowners insurance typically excludes earthquake-related damage, but earthquake endorsements or standalone policies can be added for broader protection. Appropriate coverage can support a more efficient recovery if your property is affected.

During an Earthquake

Knowing how to respond quickly if an earthquake strikes can help keep you safe. One of the most widely recommended safety drills is “Drop, Cover and Hold On.”

  • Drop to your hands and knees to help stabilize yourself.
  • Cover your head and neck with your arms and, if possible, shelter under sturdy furniture like a table or desk to protect your body from falling objects.
  • Hold on to the furniture you’re taking cover under to keep it steady and stay protected until the shaking stops.

After an Earthquake

Once the shaking stops, check yourself and others for injuries. Be cautious of aftershocks, which can follow the main quake. If your home has sustained damage, document it with photos and contact your insurance provider as soon as it’s safe to do so.
